Mallorca is three islands in one. Book the days that stitch them together.

Mallorca is limestone, and limestone leaks. That is why the island is hollow.
Rainwater has been drilling through this rock for two million years, and what it left is a network of chambers under the east coast: one with a lake big enough to row a quartet across, one hung with fossil oyster shells, two more in the hills behind Palma. All of them sit at a steady 20 degrees whatever August is doing outside.
Palma is a working city with a cathedral standing over the harbour.
La Seu has a Gaudí canopy hanging inside it and a Barceló chapel behind. Ten minutes back from the water the streets tighten into Santa Catalina, the Olivar market and courtyards you can only see from the doorway. Most of this island is a drive; this is the part you walk.

The Tramuntana: one mountain range, three completely different days.
Everything in the mountains →
A limestone wall runs the whole north-west coast, holding the terraces and olive groves it was UNESCO listed for, then drops 800 metres to the sea in the space of a few kilometres. You take it by train, by road or from a boat, and the three do not show you the same island.

The 1912 wooden train to Sóller
Narrow-gauge carriages in varnished wood leave Palma, climb through the tunnels and come out above the orange terraces. A vintage tram then rattles you down to the port.
What a day out on Mallorca actually costs.
Every tour on the site, grouped by price. A good number of the best days here come in under the cost of dinner in Palma.
Cave tickets, cathedral entry, old-town walks and the short coast hops out of the resort ports.
The full-day standards: catamarans with lunch, the island loop by train and boat, quad routes and dolphin runs.
Private skippers, chartered sailing days and the once-a-trip splurges that earn it.

Three things that only happen on Mallorca.
Beaches and boat trips exist all over the Mediterranean. A string quartet rowed across an underground lake, a 1912 train through thirteen tunnels and a gorge you arrive at by sea do not.

The concert on Lake Martel
A kilometre of chambers ends at one of the largest underground lakes anywhere, and every session there stops for the same thing: musicians in a lit rowing boat playing across the water in the dark. You walk in, you sit on the stone terracing, and afterwards a boatman rows you out. It runs to a fixed timetable, which is why the middle sessions go first.

The wooden train to Sóller
Built in 1912 on the money from the orange trade, the line still runs its original varnished carriages up through thirteen tunnels and out onto a viaduct above the valley. At the far end an open-sided tram runs down the main street to the port, past gardens that have not changed much since the citrus boom paid for all of it.

Sa Calobra and the Torrent de Pareis
The road in loops back under itself in a full knot, then drops to a cove where a gorge comes out of the mountain. Walk through the tunnels cut in the cliff and the walls close to a few metres apart with the sea at the other end. In spring the torrent is running; by August it is a dry white staircase of boulders.

Four Mallorca bookings that will not wait for you.
Most of this island can be arranged over breakfast the day before. These four run on session times, printed ferry timetables and a wind that answers to nobody.
- 01Caves of Drach Day Trip & Optional Caves of HamsThe caves admit visitors in timed sessions, each one ending with the concert on the lake. The middle-of-the-day slots fill first.
- 02Formentor Beach, Lighthouse Cruise, and Small GroupThe boat up to Formentor beach runs a printed seasonal timetable out of Port de Pollença, and there is no other way in by water.
- 03Island Tour with Boat, Tram & Train from the SouthThe Sóller line sells its seats by departure and the vintage carriages hold what they held in 1912. Morning trains go first.
- 04Sa Calobra & Cala Tuent Speedboat TourThe sea approach to Sa Calobra only sails when the north-westerly lets it, so the calm mornings are spoken for early.
The north-westerly shuts the coast. Mallorca keeps its answer underground.
The wind the mountains are named for comes over the top and flattens the north coast, and when it does the Formentor ferry and the Sa Calobra boats simply do not sail. August does something similar with heat. Both have the same fix: go inside the rock, inland to the bodegas, or into Palma.
By place — the coast, the mountains and the middle
By kind of day — deck, cave, mountain or table
Palma, the north bay, the mountains or the cave coast.
Four coastlines that behave like separate holidays, plus the villages behind them. What each one is strongest at, and the best day out from it.
Palma, the mountains, the north bay and the caves: a first Mallorca week.
